According to WebMD 75 to 90% of all visits to a doctor are for stress-related ailments. A 10-year study of 1,700 people found that those who were anxious and depressed were more likely to suffer clogged arteries and high blood pressure.

Fortunately stress can be managed and it starts simply by getting off the couch!

“Exercise has been shown to have tremendous benefits for mental health,” says Jasper Smits, director of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, ”Individuals who exercise report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression, and lower levels of stress and anger.”

  • Put some distance between you and daily stress with an evening run or brisk walk.
  • Join a gym, a sports’ team or exercise class.
  • Take up an active hobby like salsa dancing.
  • If you prefer privacy, work out in the comfort of your own home with free weights or an exercise DVD.

Whatever you do, aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per week to reap the benefits.

“This isn’t about working out five times a week for the next year, says Smits, “It’s about exercising for 20 or 30 minutes and feeling better today.”
