If you are not happy with shaving, tweezing or waxing to remove unwanted hair, laser hair removal might be just what you need.

Laser hair removal is one of the most common cosmetic procedures, it beams highly concentrated light into hair follicles, the pigments in the follicles absorb the light and that destroys the hair.

What are the benefits?

Laser hair removal is useful for removing unwanted hair from the face, legs, arms, underarm and bikini line and other areas.

  • Precision: Lasers can select dark, course hair while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
  • Speed: The pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time.
  • Predictability: Most of the patients have permanent hair loss after three to five treatments.

How to prepare:

You should limit waxing, plucking or shaving for at least six weeks before treatment. The lasers target the hairs roots. You should avoid sun exposure for six weeks before and after treatment.

What to expect:

You will be undergoing a treatment before the procedure where the hairs are trimmed to a few millimeters above the skin. The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the color, thickness and location of the hair being treated. You will need to wear appropriate eye protection. The outer layers of your skin will be protected with a cold gel or a cooling device, this will help the laser light penetrate the skin. The technician will give a pulse of light to the treatment area to make sure the best setting were used and to check for bad reactions. When the procedure is complete, you will be given an ice pack, anti-inflammatory creams or cold water to ease any discomfort. Your next appointment will be scheduled four to six weeks later and treatment will be given until hair stops growing.

Recovery and risks:

For two days afterward, the treated area will look and feel like it’s sunburned. Moisturizers may help. Over the next month the treated hair will fall out. Blisters are rare but more likely in people with a dark complexion. Other side effects may include; swelling, redness and scarring. Changes in skin color are rare but wear sunscreen for the following month after treatment to avoid temporary changes in the color of the treated area.

The cost of laser hair removal depends on the area that you want treated and the time it will take to treat the specified area. If you don’t like to shave every night or wax once every two weeks, laser hair removal is the ideal option for you.
