Have you ever gotten that sudden hot feeling creeping up your back, neck and filling your face? Feeling like you just want to rip your clothes off and lie on the floor? Yes, unfortunately that is called menopause.
What is menopause?
This is the time in a woman’s life when the ovaries ceases. The average age of menopause is 51 years old. The ovaries are the reproductive glands in women. Each ovary is about the size of an almond. The ovaries produce eggs and female hormones such as estrogen. The ovaries control the female hormones which controls the development of female body characteristics such as the breasts, body shape and body hair.
Each woman’s experience is different, symptoms may include;
Hot flashes and night sweats: A hot flash is a warm feeling that spreads over the body, most common in the chest and face. A hot flash usually lasts for about 30 seconds to several minutes. They also differ in severity and the average woman has hot flushes for about 5 years.
Urinary symptoms: Vaginal symptoms occur as a result of the lining tissues becoming thinner, drier and less elastic as estrogen levels fall, the same goes for urinary symptoms and this can lead to an increased risk of urinary infection. You may feel a sudden urge to urinate or may occur during standing, when laughing, coughing or lifting heavy objects.
Emotional symptoms: You may experience fatigue, memory problems, and irritability and mood changes. Other symptoms may include weight gain, changes in skin texture and wrinkles. The body produces small levels of male hormone testosterone and some women may experience some hair growth on the chin, upper lip and chest.
Many of the symptoms of menopause can be reduced or avoided simply by leading a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise can protect against cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, exercise can have mental health benefits combine all of these with a proper nutritional diet and you can kick menopause symptoms to the curb.
