What is dreaming
Everybody have dreams, some dream in color and others in black and white, some have vivid dreams and some cannot remember their dreams at all. We dream from the time we are babied until the day we die. But what exactly are dreams and why do we have them?
What are dreams?
Dreaming is a symbolic language designed to communicate your inner wisdom to you while you are asleep. A dream can include any of the images, thoughts and emotions that are experienced during sleep. Dreams can be very vivid or very vague; filled with joyful emotions or frightening imagery; focused and understandable or unclear and confusing. Dreams are a representation of unconscious desires, thoughts and motivations.
- There are two different components of dreams; manifest and latent content.
- Manifest content is made up of the actual images, thoughts and content in the dream.
- Latent content is made up of the hidden psychological meaning of the dream.
Circuits in the brain become activated during REM sleep which causes areas of the limbic system involved in emotion, memories and sensation become active. The brain tries to find meaning in these signals which results in dreaming.
Dreaming is our most creative and conscious state in which the chaotic, spontaneous combinations of cognitive elements produce new ideas. Dreams are the result of our brains trying to interpret external stimuli during sleep. Dreams also function as a form of psychotherapy where the dreamer is able to make connections between different thoughts and emotions in a safe environment.
Sometimes we have dreams of flying or getting lost in a situation but these really are not as abstract as one might think. Dreams are methods of compensation for events that occur in our daily lives. For example; if a person experiences unhappiness in their lives, they may have blissful and fantastic dreams as compensation. On the other hand, a person who is very successful may have dreams of failure to compensate for feelings of power.
Dreaming helps organize memories, while we sleep; our brains continue to process issues of concern and constantly try to come up with solutions. So if you are facing a difficult situation, go ahead and sleep on it, it might help you find a solution.
