Are you doing enough to ensure the health of your workforce? There are several things you can do to show your employees you value their health. Having a good wellness program in place ensures greater productivity, less absenteeism and a reduction of long term health care costs for you employees.

Workplace wellness is any program that aims to improve the health of your employees while reducing your health-related costs as an employer. Many companies implement wellness programs that focus on preventive health and lifestyle modification. This means encouraging employees to focus on key health behaviors such as increasing physical activity, improving eating habits and reducing stress.

Why implement a wellness program?

Wellness programs actually save money in the long run. Having a weekly wellness program in place will improve employee productivity, reduce health related absences and improve employee morale. Exercising improves your functionality and concentration and healthy employees take fewer sick days.

There are many small steps you can take to promote wellness, if you are not in a position to implement a wellness program, a small gesture such as offering fresh fruit once a week can be a simple way to show your employees that their health is important to the company.

When your employees avoid the flu, they avoid missing out on days, if not weeks, of work. Consider offering on-site flu vaccines, or if their health insurance doesn’t cover it, consider reimbursing employees for vaccination fees. Cover an additional percentage of the cost of health insurance premiums for employees who pass certain biometric markers.

If you can’t make structural changes to your facility, consider making the last half hour of the workday the time to exercise, bring in yoga, tai chi or Pilates instructors for the workout classes. Encourage the entire office to use the stairs, offer discounts or partially subsidize membership to a local gym.

Offer your employees healthy snack options such as fresh fruit that help fuel their performance while also meeting their nutritional needs.

Unmanaged stress had been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure and trouble sleeping. At the workplace it can lead to inefficiency, job dissatisfaction and absence from work. Encourage employees to take simple steps to reduce stress like taking frequent 5 minute breaks or just to get outside for some fresh air.
Encouraging healthy habits now can prevent or lower the risk of serious health conditions later. Adopting these same habits can help those with an existing health condition. Taking even a small step in the wellness direction can benefit your employees, your productivity and your overall health.
