You may not know just how powerful these greens can be at giving you a long life of vitality. Whether its raw spinach, green beans, peas, green apples, kiwi, lettuce or avocado, greens should be a staple in everyone’s household.

What’s frustrating today, is that our soils are becoming more and more depleted of the nutrients needed to make our whole foods as nutrient dense as they used to be years ago.  We need to simply take the steps towards adding greens to all meals and snacks.  Here’s why you should start today:

Let’s look at broccoli.  Broccoli has as much vitamin C in one single ½ cup serving, as a whole orange does.  Also, in a ½ cup serving of broccoli, you will find 40mg of calcium.  In case you need more reason to add broccoli to your plate, it also is a detoxifier because of its powerful punch towards the fight against cancer.  Get going now and steam, roast or just go raw with some yummy broccoli!

Do you remember Popeye growing up as a kid? Now there is a man who really knew how to eat well! His spinach was his key to strength and for all the right reasons too! It is rich in iron, calcium and vitamin K and the flavonoids it contains are thought to slow cognitive declines.  Spinach is also rich in antioxidants which will help fight against many ailments such as heart disease, asthma and arthritis. Spinach balances your blood sugar and helps to prevent it from fluctuating too much.  If that isn’t enough, although found in small amounts, spinach has protein!

If you are looking for radiant skin, look no further than arugula because it is high in sulfur and sulfur is a great skin purifier.  Arugula is also rich in vitamin C and potassium. Both of these nutrients are needed to regulate many functions within our body such as metabolic reactions and nerve function.  This family of vegetables is particularly beneficial in reducing cancer risk at several sites within the body.  It is a diuretic and helps to cleanse the kidneys, too.  There truly are many reasons to add this to your salad or even throw it in a stir fry. Its peppery taste will surely kick up a monotonous meal!

Let’s not forget about avocado! Yes, it is a healthy fat, yes it enables us to better absorb fat-soluble nutrients such as alpha- and beta-carotene.  It has been shown to prevent breast cancer and its nutrient properties are successful in the treatment of prostate cancer.  It helps to heal sun damage and scars and maybe even more important, avocadoes are beneficial in the regulation of blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.  It packs quite a healthy punch because an avocado contains 20 vitamins and minerals per one ounce serving, so it’s time to start finding ways to add even the smallest amount to your list of green intake.

Some other greens to give a try are bok choy, kale, cabbage, mustard greens and Brussels sprouts.  These too are great sources of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.  Looking for an easy way to add some great greens today?
